Off the Beaten Track in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand

Guest post written by: Infobarrel Writer redyelruc

Thailand is one of the most-visited countries in South-east Asia and is a popular starting point for many backpackers following “The Banana Pancake Trail” of Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.

With visitor numbers increasing every year, and greater tourist infrastructure springing up throughout the region, it is becoming increasing difficult to escape the tourist masses and get off the beaten track in Thailand.

But in Isaan, the rural Northeastern region of Thailand, there are still many places where farangs (foreigners) are few and far between.  Ubon Ratchathani is one such place.

There are no beaches here, no hilltribes, and no real mountains either.  But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do in Ubon.  In fact, some of the most unusual experiences in Thailand await any adventurous traveller who makes it this far off the beaten track.

You can visit the Ratchathani Asoke village and see what life’s like in a strict vegetarian Buddhist commune, or live the life of a monk in the International Forest Temple.  If you fancy something more active, you can volunteer at an English Camp for underprivileged kids.

Whatever your tastes, there are plenty of fun and unusual things to do when you decide to get off the beaten track in Thailand.
