Web gems: Online writing resources

There are a ton of websites with free information for making money writing online. These are some of my favorites:

No Job for Mom

I love NJFM for its candor and variety. Felicia, an experienced web writer, offers insights into her writing journey and tips for staying on track intertwined with her experiences on writing online for pay. No Job for Mom also has a small directory of links to revenue share and upfront pay sites. While the link database is a bit outdated, there are a lot of really great job leads.

Write Jobs

Write Jobs is a fantastic resource for web content writers who are looking for a feed of writing job leads. This blog publishes sets of leads twice a day and offers reviews of several online writing sites. Because this site is so dynamic, by best suggestion on how to get the most out of Write Jobs is to set a subscription either through RSS or your follow list through Blogger.

Real Ways to Earn Money Online

Real Ways to Earn Money Online is a fairly comprehensive resource for anyone looking to make money online in various ways, from writing content to performing tasks to bidding on freelance work. The writing site directory on this website is pretty up-to-date and one of the most complete resources I've come across for web writers. The reviews on content sites and job opportunities are also fairly candid and insightful.

Training tips for endurance running

Spring running season is creeping up quickly! With the beautiful weather runners are taking to the trails and the road in droves breaking out of winter hibernation. For those of us recreational runners it's a time to finally stretch out legs and revive that carefree summer feeling of sun, soft breezes and long stretches of open road lined with leafy trees and green grass.

If you're just starting out with running, preparing for a summer endurance running event means a lot of training and there's a lot to learn. There's more to running than just putting one foot in front of the other. To run injury free and keep your joints from enduring undue stress, it's important to perfect your running technique and cross-train to build your strength and improve performance.

Building a running program isn't hard. There are free tools available all over the web. Weaving it all together to know what you should be doing to train effectively is a bit more challenging.

Ohio State Senator proposes tougher mandates on men's reproductive health

Ohio lawmaker, State Senator Nina Turner (D), makes a stand for equality in how we regulate reproductive health.

While I reserve my opinion on the "Heartbeat Bill", I do have to say that as a 30-something woman I applaud Ms. Turner for her creativity in exposing an injustice. Women's reproductive health has been tightly regulated all over the place since the beginning of time. In 2012, it seems absolutely ridiculous that in the US, a woman's reproductive health is regulated as it is.

Regulated? What? Yes, regulated.

Examples:
  • If you have health insurance in the US, chances are that your health insurance does not pay for birth control pills, including when they are prescribed to treat a medical condition.
  • Your insurance also does not cover reproductive services if you need medical assistance conceiving.
  • In some US States, women need to have their husbands' permission to have their tubes tied.
  • Even if you have a medical condition that would make a pregnancy life-threatening, the newly proposed Heartbeat Bill in Ohio would have you jump through hoops to save your own life. Not only would you have to go through a life-wrenching decision once, but you would have to relive it to the satisfaction of the law.

It seems only fair that we as a society make sure that our men are taking good care of their reproductive health, doesn't it? Ironically, the majority of lawmakers currently attempting to impose new regulations in Ohio on women's reproductive health are at a ripe age to benefit from the newly proposed Viagra Bill.

Thank you State Senator Nina Turner for speaking up for women!

Why you should support 'Girls With Sole'

"I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life's a bitch. You've got to go out and kick ass."   - Maya Angelou
Fitness is not just about sculpted abs, rock hard buns and trophies. It's about perseverance, endurance, strength, will, self-reliance, trust, achievement. Fitness can lift a soul from the depths of pain to a healing place. Sounds melodramatic but nothing could be more true for survivors who find healing through fitness.

Girls With Sole is a nonprofit organization based in the Cleveland area that focuses on bringing fitness
and wellness programs to at-risk and abused girls aged 9-18. GWS gives these girls something special. It's a place where there is someone who believes in them, who supports them and who is pushing for their success. GWS gives these girls an opportunity to feel empowered.

In addition to fitness programs headed up by volunteer coaches, Girls With Sole provides its clients free running shoes, fitness journals, sports bras and water bottles. Because GWS has a huge need to fill and a tight budget, even its Executive Director, Liz Ferro, works as a full-time unpaid volunteer.

This organization is doing everything it can to support a group of children and young women that fall through the cracks, and it needs your help.

Extra cash with Topline

Topline offers a unique solution to web content writers for one of their biggest problems, accidental Adsense clicks.

Topine is an adblock plug-in for the Chrome, Firefox and Safari broswers that blocks your own Adsense ads from appearing on your screen and replaces them with ads from the Topline network. Every time your ad is replaced on your browser through the plug-in you earn points which can then convert to cash.

The current pay out for Topline is small, $0.75 per 1000 points. However, as the size of the ad network increases, the potential for the pay does as well.
